Discover Nee House Chinese Restaurant

Walking into Nee House Chinese Restaurant for the first time, I wasn’t expecting much more than a quick neighborhood meal, but what I found instead was the kind of place locals quietly rely on week after week. Tucked into a modest plaza at 13843 N Tatum Blvd # 15, Phoenix, AZ 85032, this diner-style Chinese restaurant has been feeding families, office workers, and longtime residents with steady consistency rather than flashy trends. That reliability is exactly what keeps people coming back.

I’ve eaten here on rushed lunch breaks and on slower evenings when I wanted comfort food that didn’t feel rushed. The menu leans classic, focusing on familiar Cantonese-style dishes rather than experimental fusion. You’ll see staples like chow mein, fried rice, Mongolian beef, sweet and sour chicken, and egg foo young, all prepared in a straightforward, no-nonsense way. During one visit, I watched a regular order the same beef with broccoli he’s been getting for years, and the staff knew his preference before he finished speaking. That kind of rhythm only happens in restaurants that have earned trust over time.

One thing that stands out is portion size. Like many traditional Chinese diners, the plates here are generous. A single entrée paired with rice can easily stretch into two meals, which explains why many reviews mention value for money. According to consumer dining studies published by the National Restaurant Association, value and consistency rank higher than novelty for repeat customers, especially in casual dining. Nee House fits squarely into that expectation by keeping prices reasonable while maintaining steady quality.

The cooking process itself is refreshingly transparent. You can hear the steady rhythm of the wok from the kitchen, and dishes arrive hot and properly cooked, not sitting under heat lamps. Sauces are balanced rather than overly sweet, and vegetables retain some crunch instead of dissolving into softness. That’s often a sign of experienced line cooks who understand timing, something culinary institutes like the Culinary Institute of America emphasize as a core skill in wok-based cooking.

What I personally appreciate most is how approachable the place feels. There’s no pressure to order something trendy or unfamiliar. If you’re new to Chinese cuisine, the staff will gladly suggest crowd favorites. If you already know what you want, your order is taken quickly and accurately. On one visit, I asked for a slightly lighter sauce on a chicken dish, and it came out exactly as requested. Small adjustments like that show attention to detail, even in a casual setting.

The location also plays a role in its popularity. Being near residential areas and offices makes it an easy stop for takeout, and many customers seem to rely on it for family dinners during the week. Online reviews frequently mention dependable takeout timing and orders packed carefully, which matters more than people realize. A 2023 Square survey on restaurant habits found that order accuracy is one of the top factors influencing repeat takeout customers, even more than décor or ambiance.

Of course, it’s not a luxury dining experience. The interior is simple, and the focus is clearly on the food rather than atmosphere. If you’re expecting elaborate plating or upscale décor, this may not be your spot. But if your goal is authentic comfort food, consistent flavors, and generous portions, this restaurant delivers without pretending to be something it’s not.

Overall, Nee House Chinese Restaurant holds its place by doing the basics well, day after day. In a city full of dining options, that kind of quiet dependability is harder to find than it sounds, and it explains why so many locals keep this diner in their regular rotation.

  • Excellent, authentic with top rated food and service. Steve was cheerful, friendly, knowledgeable, and humble. Staff was supportive. I had Singapore noodles vegan style with snow peas, cabbage, broccoli, onions, and water chestnuts. The vegetables were tender and had a good texture, not soft or soggy. The curry was flavorful and had a subtle zing. If you like meat, it's really good as it was my favorite before going vegan. All the food here is good, and there's a reason it's voted one of the Best in the valley. This is a bustling family place much loved by locals. There were many to go orders. I went before the rush. Ample parking in a large strip mall on a busy intersection. Enjoy.

  • The food here is almost always good... just not great. That being said, it is by far the best chinese restaurant we have found in the Scottsdale area. The wonton and hot and sour soups have good flavor. Orange chicken is a go-to. Unfortunately, none of the dishes marked spicy actual are... but they tend to have good flavor. We have also noticed an inconsistency with the amount of meat you get when ordering the same dish. Sometimes a lot, sometimes almost none. Edit: Finally tried some of their fresh seafood dishes. Definitely recommend the Kowloon Crab!

  • I have only been here one time (10/23/17), but will definitely be back! The duck was delicious and the service was great. The lady who waited on us was great and also hilarious. The food arrived quickly and I am looking forward to trying more dishes. I live a little far away but it's worth the drive.

  • The best and most delicious Cantonese style Chinese food in Arizona. The ingredients are so fresh, the variety is plenty, and the portions are big. I'm from Hong Kong, and I'm very picky about the seafood and Chinese food I eat. Nee House delivers outstanding quality every single time, and I've been going there for more than a decade. The quality remains excellent! Just celebrated Chinese Luna New Year there today with my Dad. We ordered an entire 4-lb crab (live from the fish tank), snow pea leaves, Mongolian beef, wanton soup, Singaporean noodles, and tofu with dried scallop (my favorite), and we enjoyed every single bite of the food!

  • Great place for authentic Chinese food. This is close to eating at restaurants in LA like Sam Woo. Prices are decent and the staff is friendly. 4 stars because if the decor. It’s just typical Chinese decor, but the food is 5 stars!

  • Cozy classic chinese sit-down restaurant. Not bad for a date. These people aren't your neighborhood delivery spot. This is a cut above. So treat them accordingly. The service is spotty, but the selection and quality are excellent.
